Caring for Oily Skin

The natural oil in skin and hair helps to keep it hydrated, protects it from the environment and keeps it looking healthy and glowing. However, when the sebaceous glands produce too much oil, this can lead to greasy skin. Likely to be a genetic predisposition, many teenagers also suffer from excessively oily skin due to hormonal changes. A shiny appearance, enlarged pores, an unclean, greasy feeling and imperfections are all primary concerns for those with this skin condition.

What happens within skin to make it oily?

Oily skin is characterised by overactive sebaceous glands, which produce an excess of sebum on the skin. This causes pores to stretch to cope with the excess oil. The sebaceous glands are most abundant in the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin), but also more frequent around the neck, chest, head and back, so those areas tend to be most affected by oil production.

What causes oily skin?

Oily skin is usually genetic, though the condition can be exacerbated by the use of unsuitable products, stress, diet and lifestyle. Hormonal fluctuations can also have an effect, so puberty, pregnancy and the menopause can all cause variations in the amount of oil the sebaceous glands produce.

How to care for oily skin?

While oily skin is usually genetic, there are steps that can be taken to alleviate the condition. Any beauty regimen should be carefully assessed.

Products that contain rich emollients are likely to clog pores, therefore bar soaps, stick foundations and heavy creams and lotions should be avoided in favour of liquids, serums and gels. Ingredients that minimise oil and help to unblock clogged pores are essential.
