Skin Explained: Dehydrated Skin

While dry skin and dehydrated skin can share many of the same characteristics, such as tightness, roughness, flaking and scaling, redness and sensitivity, they are quite different skin concerns.

Skin Explained: Dehydrated Skin

Dry skin generally refers to skin lacking in oil. Dehydrated skin is skin lacking in moisture - it is not so much a skin type as a skin condition. Even oily and combination skin can be dehydrated.
What happens when you get dehydrated skin?

Dehydrated skin occurs when the protective uppermost layer of the skin, known as the stratum corneum, is lacking in moisture. Complexions appear dull, flaky and more mature looking, as dehydration makes wrinkles appear more pronounced.

What causes Dehydrated Skin?

Dehydrated skin can be caused by a number of factors including the environment, weather conditions, lifestyle and incorrect skin care. Factors include prolonged exposure to the sun, cold wind, air conditioning and heating, which causes moisture to evaporate from the skin. An excessive lifestyle that includes alcohol, smoking and a poor diet can also serve to dry out skin. Dehydrated skin can be aggravated by topical skin care, i.e. using incorrect products for your skin.

How to care for Dehydrated Skin

Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day is key. A diet rich in fruit and vegetables will also help hydration levels in the skin. Targeted serums loaded with antioxidants, skin-replenishing ingredients and hyaluronic acid will be very beneficial for this skin type.
