In an age of information overload, it can be difficult to know where to turn for skincare advice you can truly rely on. We caught up with Dr Sam Bunting to ask her some questions about her new Skincare Club – the latest in her quest to make dermatology a more talked about and accessible topic, for everyone.
Why did you decide to dedicate your career to giving professional advice on skincare?
Our skin is incredibly precious – when it’s not in top form, it has the power to insidiously impact on every aspect of our day. It can cripple self-confidence in relationships, diminish our voices at work because we are scared to draw attention to ourselves; and even erode the enjoyment of holidays or the gym, because of the urge to hide our true selves. As a result, I’ve become passionate about increasing access to good quality skincare advice.
I created the Dr Sam Bunting Clinic on Harley Street to bridge the gap between traditional dermatology and beauty. There is a huge appetite for using rational, evidence-based skincare to solve problems like acne, rosacea and melasma in a way that also acknowledges the desire for a wonderful complexion that makes “make-up free” a realistic goal. As part of my role, I get huge pleasure in helping women eliminate the word confusion from how they think about skincare. I think that whilst the Internet has helped educate and enlighten women on ingredients that actually help them solve problems, it has also created so much choice and elevated so many guiding voices, that women don’t know where to turn. I developed my YouTube channel to help those women cut through the noise, acknowledging that not everyone will make it into my clinic.
You have recently set up Dr Sam's Skincare Club, which like your YouTube Channel and Instagram account, aims to make efficacious skincare more accessible and understandable to a wider audience. Tell us more about it?
I wanted to create a fun, safe way of talking about these sensitive issues amongst like-minded individuals and make it a special occasion – and that is how Dr Sam’s Skincare Club was born. I host intimate gatherings in a beautiful private members’ club environment and encourage members to stay connected with our closed Facebook group. For January’s gathering, I decided to partner up with SkinCeuticals. Why? To put it simply, it is one of my favourite brands. We will only ever partner with brands we love.
Your career is built around advising on skincare. What is it that you do yourself to keep your complexion in such healthy glowing condition?
When it comes to my personal skincare regimen, I’m a total retinoid + Vitamin C + Mineral sunscreen kinda gal. For me, it's important to shield my skin from UV and pollution during the day. Skinceuticals C E Ferulic is my go-to serum for day without fail. This Vitamin C serum is a gentle-yet-effective antioxidant to pair alongside daily sunscreen to keep my skin bright and protected. If I were to pick one #DrSamScolds, it would definitely be forgetting to make sunscreen your first anti-ageing step! It drives me crazy when I hear talk of investing in serums and eye creams, but yet proper broad-spectrum sunscreen doesn’t feature in a routine.
Is seeking professional advice only for those with problem skin?
All in all, I think that if you have problem skin, seeking professional advice is a no-brainer. Easily solved issues like acne cause so much heartache and can wreck skin through scarring, so it just makes sense. Even if you're just looking at a good anti-ageing routine, it can still be challenging to put together proper actives in a routine to combine them correctly and avoid irritation – again, a good professional can make this process super-easy. For most of us the ultimate luxury is to have someone trusted who knows the field to eliminate doubt and guesswork for us – I know that's what our patients value. It's the smart move when it comes to achieving the long-term goal of healthy skin that looks beautiful.
