Looking Good really is skin deep – They say the proof in the pudding is in the eating, so I headed to Jill Du Toit’s Helensburgh salon to see if cosmeceuticals live up to all the hype. Jill, who trades as In Clover @ Home the west of Scotland, started by putting me under an ultra-violet light to have a look at the sun damage on my skin– the results were pretty shocking, even though I’ve got pale skin and have never made a habit of sitting in the sun. Seen the latest advert for Boots’ Soltan range, featuring all those scarily blemished women? Well, that’s how I looked. I also had hyper-pigmentation – dark areas – around the eyes. Jill’s healing hands then cleansed and exfoliated my skin, before applying a layer of Serum 15, the Vitamin C concentrate that reportedly works wonders as an antioxidant to get rid of the free radicals that can age the skin. Next it was onto those dark patches, which Gill treated with Phyto+ to reverse the discolouration. Moisture came from Hydrating B5 gel, which contains hyaluronic acid to seal in the moisture. Finally, it was time for sun protection. Jill agrees with Professor Griffith's that protecting skin from the sun, as well as all UVA and UVB rays, is the most important thing you can do to protect your skin from the signs of aging. She used Daily Sun Defense SPF20 on my skin, and gave me a card that outlined the regime to follow over the coming months. So, did it work? Obviously, it’s early days, but I can genuinely say that five days on my skin is less oily than it’s been for years, feels very soft to the touch and has a healthy glow that was last present when I was about 15. As for those lines and dark patches, I’ll keep you all posted. By Marianne Taylor.

Una uses SkinCeuticals an American brand of 'cosmeceuticals', which are especially effective for city-worn skin. The C+E antioxidant, a mega-hit of vitamins C and E, is a wonder product that fends off the ravages of UV nasties while ironing out wrinkles".

"C Force - as an alternative to injecting wrinkles with collagen or restylane, vitamin-c is considered the agent most likely to succeed. But forget your average orange-coloured concoction, the vitamin needs serious scientific treatments if it's going to do anything. Vitamin C is easily degraded by heat and light." "It's also very acidic so it can irritate, says Wendy Lewis. But two approaches have shown the most promising results" - Lewis favours the Topical Vitamin C range by SkinCeuticals which has stabilised L-Ascorbic acid (basic Vitamin C) with a secret formula which, to make it less irritating, is put in a low-pH base.

"After a SkinCeuticals facial, you leave the salon feeling thoroughly deep-cleansed and glowing. The next morning, your skin still looks radiant".
